About This Guide
Good preparation makes a piercing appointment smoother, safer and more comfortable — for you and for your piercer. Yet most people arrive underprepared, having found generic advice that does not address the specifics of their situation. This guide changes that.
Whether you are booking your first piercing and need to know everything from scratch, researching how to choose a trustworthy studio, dealing with a medical condition that might affect your appointment, or preparing a teenager for their first experience, the 14 guides in this resource cover your specific situation in full.
Quick Answers
The preparation questions our clients ask most
Should you eat before a piercing?
Yes. A proper meal two to three hours before your appointment helps maintain blood sugar during the session. Low blood sugar causes dizziness and can make the experience more difficult than it needs to be.
Can you take painkillers before a piercing?
Paracetamol is generally fine. Ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided in the 24 hours before your appointment as they thin the blood and increase bleeding during the procedure. Always tell your piercer what you have taken.
Does hydration affect your piercing?
Yes. Well-hydrated clients handle the experience better and heal more efficiently. Dehydrated skin is also harder to pierce accurately. Drink plenty of water in the days before your appointment, not just on the morning of.
What should I look for when choosing a piercing studio?
Regulated UK studios must be registered with their local authority. Look for visible hygiene standards, single-use sterile needles, implant-grade jewellery as standard and a piercer willing to answer questions before you book.
Are there medical conditions that affect piercings?
Yes. Blood thinners, diabetes, certain autoimmune conditions and some medications can all affect healing and the piercing process. Always disclose your full medical history to your piercer before any session begins.
How old do you need to be to get pierced in the UK?
For most piercings, there is no legal minimum age but parental consent is standard for anyone under 16. Intimate piercings require clients to be 18. Responsible studios will always ask for ID and verify age before proceeding.

What Happens at a Professional Piercing Appointment
A step-by-step breakdown of what a typical appointment at a regulated UK studio involves, from arrival through to leaving with your new piercing.
Arrival
Consultation and Consent Form
You will complete a health and consent form. Your piercer will ask about relevant medical history, medications and any allergies. This is a required step at every legitimate UK studio — not optional paperwork.
Preparation
Jewellery Selection and Area Marking
Your piercer will discuss your jewellery options, confirm sizing and mark the placement on your skin. You approve the position before anything proceeds. This is the moment to raise any last concerns about placement.
Piercing
The Procedure Itself
A sterile single-use needle is used. The actual piercing takes a fraction of a second. Your piercer will guide you through breathing. The jewellery is placed immediately after the needle passes through.
Aftercare
Cleaning and Aftercare Instructions
The area is cleaned and your piercer walks you through the full aftercare routine before you leave. Follow these instructions precisely — they are specific to your placement and your jewellery material.
