About This Guide
A well-prepared client has a better experience. The tattooing goes more smoothly, healing is faster and the result looks better long-term. Yet most people arrive at their first appointment without knowing half of what they should. This guide exists to change that.
We have grouped every preparation question our artists hear into six clear topic areas so you can navigate directly to what you need. Whether you are checking your eligibility, preparing your skin in the weeks before your appointment or just trying to decide what tattoo to get, the answers are here.
The Questions We Hear Most
Fast answers before you dig into the full guides
Should I eat before my tattoo appointment?
Yes, always. A full meal two hours before helps maintain blood sugar during the session. Low blood sugar causes dizziness and can make the experience significantly harder.
Can I drink alcohol before a tattoo?
No. Alcohol thins the blood, increases bleeding and impairs healing. Most studios will not tattoo clients who show signs of recent alcohol consumption.
Should I moisturise before a tattoo?
Yes, in the days before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin is easier to tattoo and produces a cleaner result. Do not apply heavy moisturiser on the morning of your session.
Can you tattoo over scars?
Often yes, depending on the type of scar, its age and its texture. Older, flatter scars are generally more suitable. Your artist will assess this during a consultation.
Can you get tattooed if you are pregnant?
No. UK studios follow NHS guidance and will not tattoo pregnant or breastfeeding clients. There are infection and immune system risks during pregnancy that make this inadvisable.
What age can you get a tattoo in the UK?
You must be 18 or over. There are no legal exceptions, including parental consent. Studios are legally required to check ID before proceeding with any client.
Am I Eligible? Health and Safety
These are the questions most people hesitate to ask but need to know the answer to before booking. Tattoo studios assess eligibility on a case-by-case basis and the guides below give you an honest picture of where your specific situation sits, so you can have a more informed conversation with your artist.
